Features

How Salinity works.

How it learns your engines, every feature by system, what each status means and what you need aboard.

Engine monitoring

Engine and battery monitoring.

Salinity learns what each engine normally reads at each RPM range, trip by trip. When oil pressure, coolant, voltage or fuel flow moves outside that range, it tells you. Built, not in the current Android app.

The example updates every 0.8 seconds and mimics throttle changes. Salinity compares each reading with this engine’s learned normal for the RPM range it is running in.

At idle RPM, all four compared readings match this boat’s learned normal.

Small demonstration. These readings only show the idea. Salinity is built to compare many more NMEA 2000 readings, depending on what the boat broadcasts.

Example only. Illustrative RPM ranges and readings for an example engine, not manufacturer limits, proof of safe operation, a diagnosis, or live boat data.

How it learns

Useful from trip one.

Hard reference limits and same-trip comparisons give context before Salinity has learned your engine. They never replace the helm display or manual.

Learns trip by trip.

Each complete trip adds oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltage and other supported readings to a separate normal for each RPM range, from idle to wide-open throttle.

Reads. Never controls.

Salinity uses that history to spot a move outside normal. It listens to NMEA 2000 but never sends commands back.

Six systems

Every feature, by system.

Every Salinity feature sits under one plain word. Open a system to see what works in the current Android app, what is built but not in it, what is in it but not proven, and what comes later.

Worldwide NMEA 2000 compatibility

Works with any NMEA 2000 brand.

Salinity is not tied to one chartplotter, engine brand, or region. Its read-only Bluetooth gateway direction uses supported standard data already moving across the boat's NMEA 2000 network.

The simple ruleNo brand whitelist. Salinity is built to use supported data from any engine, sensor, or display that publishes it onto NMEA 2000.

Those engine, position, depth, fuel, battery and environmental features are not region-locked, and they are not in the current Android app, which cannot connect to a boat. Salinity is read-only and never sends commands back to the network.

Chartplotters and displays
  • Garmin
  • Lowrance
  • Simrad
  • Raymarine
  • Furuno
  • B&G
  • Humminbird
  • Any other NMEA 2000-capable MFD

These are examples, not limits. The brand at the helm does not decide compatibility; the supported PGNs available on the network do.

Engines
  • Yamaha
  • Mercury & MerCruiser
  • Suzuki
  • Honda Marine
  • Tohatsu
  • Volvo Penta
  • Yanmar
  • Cummins
  • Caterpillar
  • MAN
  • MTU
  • Scania
  • John Deere Marine
  • BRP & Evinrude
  • Any other engine bridged to NMEA 2000

These are examples, not limits. Some engine networks need an approved interface first, for example Yamaha Command Link or Mercury SmartCraft gateway hardware.

An unlisted brand is not excluded. Compatibility depends on the exact model, interface, supported PGNs, and data it publishes. Brand names are examples only; Salinity is not affiliated with or endorsed by these manufacturers.

Before you install

What you need aboard.

Salinity is an Android app; there is no iPhone app. NMEA-powered features need a compatible Bluetooth NMEA 2000 gateway, and the current Android app cannot connect to one, so engine, live-data and trip features are not in it. Weather, tides, currents, regulations, the catch log, maintenance reminders and phone-based safety tools work without engine data.

On the salinity.live trip planner, NOAA Marine and BlueTopo map coverage focuses on U.S. waters, and USGS Satellite is online-only. At launch there is one paid plan, Pro at $25 a month, with your first Salinity gateway included.

Boat memory

One record for the whole boat.

Salinity is designed so the boat, engines, sensors, trips, maintenance, conditions, places, files, credentials and owner-approved people all connect. That is how a single reading becomes a useful event, and how the history becomes more useful trip by trip. Engine readings and trips are not in the current Android app.
